Short courses of the Nebrija Arts and Humanities Institute Artes del cuerpo, artes del encuentro

This course will introduce students to artistic practices that, throughout the 20th century, have taken shape in contexts connected to the domestic sphere and public space, questioning and rethinking the relationship between the two, as well as the sociocultural framework in which they are inscribed. Performance, happening, urban intervention, dérive, relational art, and the pedagogical turn are fundamental to contemporary artistic practices and to reflecting on the relationship between art and its historical context.

Perhaps the common denominator of these practices—often employing “do-it-yourself” or “guerrilla” techniques and strategies—is their capacity to transcend the traditional roles assigned to the creator and the spectator. By reclaiming the possibilities of the body, of collectivity, of movement and travel, of the “do it yourself” ethos, of the kitchen or horticulture, many artists have sought to step outside the academic and/or elitist sphere traditionally associated with Fine Arts.

This course aims to offer both an advocacy for and a constructive, collective critique of this art, which today occupies a central place in the production of spaces for encounter and action.
